Pronto Update: Slipping Gears
As you may have noticed, some of our bikes are experiencing slipping gears and/or popping sounds in 5th and 7th gears. This is occurring in spite of regular maintenance of the bikes. At a minimum, our Maintenance Team checks every bike once per month to ensure that our fleet is in working order. We’ve been working hard to get to the bottom of the issue and—after detailed conversations with our manufacturer—we have recently found the source and come up with a solution.
We expect to have the issue fully resolved within the next month or so, but—in the meantime—if you notice a bike with this problem, we encourage you to use 4th and 6th gears as a substitute.
Thanks to all who provided the feedback that helped us identify and understand this issue. For those who prefer a theme song with their Pronto updates: click here. Fun Fact: Pronto bikes contain internal hub gears which are very different from the gearing system of most US bikes. Internal hubs are widely used in Europe and on bike share fleets around the world since they’re enclosed and protected from the elements. Internal hubs also contain a spring-loaded clutch and allow the rider to change gears while sitting at a stoplight or cruising down a hill.
