#PeopleForPronto Portrait Series (10/10)
On the eve of Seattle Pride, we are proud to present our final feature in the #PeopleForPronto Portrait Series: Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. In his Vision for Seattle, Mayor Murray expresses a commitment to “developing a comprehensive, multi-modal transportation strategy,” with Pronto as a major component of that mission. Read on to learn more about why bikes in general, and Pronto specifically, are important to our Mayor.
You hold the very first Pronto member key. Why is Pronto meaningful to you?
Pronto reminds me of when I was younger and didn’t have a car and my bike was the only way to get around.
What does Pronto add to Seattle?
It’s an easy, fun and healthy way to get around the city for residents and visitors alike.
What was your first bike?
It was a Murray, and I shared it with half a dozen siblings.
What is your favorite memory of you and a bike?
Any long bike ride as a young kid when you feel the wind and see the mountains, and just feel the freedom of it.
Where would you go for a #ProntoDateNight with your husband?
A ride down to Marjorie’s on 14th and Union.
Why is biking important?
Biking provides a healthy, low-cost alternative for getting around town. Every person on a bike means fewer cars on the streets and fewer emissions into our environment.
If you could offer a few words of encouragement to folks who haven’t ridden in years to get back and ride, what would they be?
You should always wear a helmet and ride defensively. Don’t assume someone else will follow the rules of the road.
Any other fun tidbits about bikes, fun stories, or anything else relevant you would like to add?
In high school, I was a rabid bicyclist and known for biking to school when the other kids drove. So they put my bike up in trees around campus and took pictures of it for the yearbook.
